2016 Eileen Hardy Shiraz 1.5L Magnum
Vintage 2016 proved to be quite unique with high quality fruit being delivered to the winery with well above average yields. Cool winter and warm spring was preceded by a late rainfall event that boosted vine growth and refreshed soils. Closer to harvest bumper crops were aided into ripening by mild-summer temperatures and sporadic rain. Picking at optimum maturity has resulted in wines which display vibrant bright colours with ripe flavour profiles, rounded flavoursome palates and soft fine tannins.
Hand-picked and berry sorted prior to open fermentation and basket pressing, the wine has benefitted from 17 months of maturation in large format oak vessels to preserve the fragrance & characteristics of what is a truly exemplary McLaren Vale Shiraz.
The bouquet is a blueberry and mulberry cocktail wrapped in a warm pepper, mocha, leather capsule. Sniffs of sage, red plum and spice are layered over top that comes on the second wave once the wine rests for a bit. Very aromatic, oak complementing the fruit as opposed to the contrary.
The palate is juicy, fluid, smooth and dense in blue and black fruits. The mid-palate is fleshy, round and pleasantly textured with a touch of acid which helps keep the wine lingering. There’s a soft grip to the tannin which shows the more serious and structure side to the wine, however finish is long and soft with a peppering of gingersnap and Christmas spice left at the end.
Food Matching Suggestions: Canard à l’orange.
Cellaring potential: Drink now or up to 15 year.
